Like many young female artists before her, JoJo Levesque has benefited from voice and performance training in her youth, singing and acting in her hometown, but there’s one particular young artist with whom she shares a startling number of connections with, another groundbreaking, talented young female entertainer who died tragically in a plane crash in August 2001, the late vocalist Aaliyah.
Only one year apart in age (Aaliyah was 22, JoJo is 21), both young women attracted the attention of older accomplished artists (Eminem mentions JoJo in “Ass Like That” and Alliyah was allegedly married to R. Kelly before her parents annulled the marriage), both artists worked with Timbaland, and producer Vincent Herbert beleeved that the spirit of Aaliyah had brought JoJo to his label, Blackground records.
It seems the two artists also have a Drake connection. Upon Aaliyah’s death, Drake wrote a touching letter to her that spoke about her influence on his work and rumor has it that Drake has a tattoo of Aalliyah on his back, and JoJo recently remixed the Drake song “Marvin’s Room.” With any luck, JoJo could appear on Drake concert dates 2012. But hopefully the similarites end there and JoJo will be around for a long to come.
